Medical and life science are key industries. Medical companies have unique requirements such as bio-compatibility and excellent record keeping. Here are some frequently asked questions that come up when engineers and other professionals deal with medical and life science manufacturing.

Q: Is Teflon a safe material?
A: Consult with DuPont but it is safe for a great many of uses.

Q: Can we have parts made out of just Teflon?
A: Yes, this is a common material to make whole parts from.

Q: Is PVC a good material?
A: We don't recommend it for implantables or heavy contact applications not because we're worried about safety but because the material could be slowly phased out over time and is not rumored to be as safe as other materials.

Q: What kind of ceramic is good for medical projects?
A: BeO is good if not in the body. Other materials to consider: alumina, Macor. Ceramic can be quite sharp so be sure to have all edges chamfered and no sharp corners should exist unless they will be potted. Some other materials which are not ceramic but are common include: plastic, titanium, niobium alloy. Some engineers like to use Al-N as well.

Q: When I receive my parts after ordering?
A: If it is a repeat order on a blanket PO, delivery might be 1-2 days but if it is a first time custom order, check your quotation for the exact lead time. It usually takes about 2 weeks but it can depend from case-to-case.

Q: Is Aluminum [Aluminium] used much in medical manufacturing?
A: Yes, Aluminum is common in all industries including medical and life science due to cost and time savings along with light weight and certain performance benefits.

Q: Is gold a good material to use for medical devices?
A: In terms of performance, yes, but there are many drawbacks so people try to avoid it and use something else when possible.

Q: I need parts on the double. What can I do?
A: Send a text to 415.89O.3O22 and include drawings if possible. Also can email to bkengineering@lycos.com

Q: I need a lot of parts and I don't have a huge budget. The parts need to be affordable.
A: See the list of resources. The list includes reliable suppliers and service providers.
